Abdominoplasty, more commonly known as a tummy tuck, is a surgical procedure which removes excess fat and skin from the abdomen and tightens the underlying muscles to produce a firmer, flatter abdomen and waist. The tummy tuck can improve the appearance of both a protruding belly and love handles.
You may be a candidate for a tummy tuck if you are physically healthy and have realistic expectations for improving a protruding or sagging abdomen. The best candidates are generally individuals who are bothered by a pocket of fat or loose skin which has proven resistant to diet and exercise. The tummy tuck can also be beneficial for women whose skin and muscles have become stretched from pregnancy. Previously obese individuals who have lost a great deal of weight are often better candidates for a belt lipectomy which requires an extended incision that runs around the body.
Your tummy tuck procedure may be performed at Dr. Manchester’s surgicenter located in San Diego, California, or if you prefer it may be performed in the hospital. General anesthesia is commonly used and surgical times range from two to five hours. A transverse incision is made which is located at the level of the pubic hair between the hipbones. This will result in a scar that isconcealed by most bikini bottoms and underwear and will fade to a fine line with time. Working through this incision, Dr. Manchester will free the skin of the abdomen and flanks to the level of the rib cage in order to trim away all possible skin and fat and tighten the abdominal muscles and, if necessary, the waist. Liposuction can also be performed to improve love handles.
You will likely experience a feeling of tightness and discomfort following your tummy tuck procedure which can be alleviated with medication. Swelling and slight bruising are also common, and some numbness can occur in the lower abdomen. Sensation is typically regained after three to six months. You will be required to wear an abdominal binder day and night for three weeks to provide support and minimize bleeding and swelling. Your total recovery can take anywhere from two weeks to several months. Normal activities, including work, can typically be resumed after two weeks, though sports and strenuous activities will need to be suspended for six weeks. Your final results will be achieved after six to nine months and you can help to maintain these results with a balanced diet and regular exercise.
