Liposuction is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures performed today. This procedure sculpts the body by removing excess fat. Commonly treated areas include the cheeks, chin, neck, upper arms, the waist, abdomen, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, calves and ankles. While liposuction may be performed on its own, it is often combined with other procedures to improve the body contour.

You may be a candidate for liposuction if you are physically healthy and have realistic expectations for reducing unwanted fat. Liposuction is most effective in treating areas which have proven resistant to diet and exercise, such as the saddle bags or love handles.

Dr. Manchester performs liposuction at the Manchester Clinic located in San Diego, California. Either local or general anesthesia may be used and surgical times average two or more hours depending on the amount of fat being removed. There are numerous liposuction techniques available today which may be used separately or in combination. Tumescent liposuction is often used when removing large quantities of fat or when treating areas with large fat deposits as it minimizes blood loss. For this technique a large amount of fluid is first injected into the fatty tissues to liquefy the fat prior to removal. Tumescent liposuction is also the preferred method for treating the abdomen. The super-wet technique is similar to tumescent liposuction in that it uses fluid to liquefy the fat. Ultrasonic liposuction is typically used when treating areas where we want the skin to shrink or contract afterward, such as the back. With all methods, a small tube known as a cannula is inserted through tiny inconspicuous incisions and then used to break up the fat layer and suction it out.

You may experience some bruising, swelling, numbness and discomfort following your procedure, though most newer methods for liposuction involve less bruising and swelling. You will be prescribed medication to help alleviate any discomfort that does occur. You will be able to return home approximately four hours after your surgery and work can often be resumed within three to four days. A compression garment will need to be worn for several weeks. You can help to maintain the results of your liposuction procedure by following a sensible diet and exercise routine.
