Mastopexy, more commonly known as a breast lift, is a surgical procedure which restores a more youthful shape and appearance to a woman’s breast. The breasts can lose their natural elasticity and begin to sag for a variety of reasons: weight loss, pregnancy, breast feeding, age, and gravity. The breast lift addresses these issues by lifting the breast to a higher, more youthful position. The surgery may also reduce the size of the areola or be combined with implants for additional breast volume and firmness.
You may be a candidate for a breast lift if you are a physically healthy woman who has realistic expectations for improving the appearance of sagging breasts. If you are planning on becoming pregnant in the future, you may be advised to postpone your surgery.
Dr. Manchester is located in San Diego, California. He performs the mastopexy procedure with general anesthesia and surgical times average two and one-half hours. While there are various incisions which may be used, the most common incision follows the natural contour of the breast in the shape of an anchor. Working through this incision, Dr. Manchester will reduce the size of the areola if necessary, elevate the areola and nipple position, and remove excess skin. If implants are being inserted at the time of surgery, the doctor will create a pocket either under the breast tissue or under the breast muscle and then insert the implants. Patients with small breasts or minimal sagging may be candidates for modified procedures such as the doughnut or concentric mastopexy which involves a circular incision around the areola and the removal of a doughnut-shaped section of skin.
After your breast lift surgery, your breasts will likely feel swollen and uncomfortable. Pain medication will be prescribed to help with the discomfort. Some numbness of the breast can also occur. This is typically temporary and fades within six weeks. A surgical bra will be worn for several days and will then be replaced with a standard bra which will need to be worn at all times for three to four weeks. Work may be resumed after one or more weeks while heavy lifting and strenuous activities and exercise will need to be suspended for three to four weeks.
