Belt Lipectomy / Lower Body Lift in San Diego – Dr. Gary H. Manchester
Belt lipectomy, also known as a lower body lift, is a surgical procedure intended for individuals who have lost a significant amount of weight, such as those who have undergone gastric bypass surgery, and are now left with an excess of loose, sagging skin in the mid section of the body. The belt lipectomy is essentially a combination of several procedures: the tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), thigh lift, and buttock lift. The surgery can improve hanging skin and fat from the front, sides and back of the middle of the body including the abdominal area, the outer thigh and hip area, the back and the buttocks.
You may be a San Diego lower body lift candidate if you have lost a significant amount of weight and are now bothered by an excess of loose, sagging or hanging skin along the mid section of the body. It’s important that your weight has been stabilized for more than nine months. If you have lost your weight as a result of gastric bypass surgery, belt lipectomy can be performed one year or later post operatively. This is a major surgical procedure and, as such, the patient should be in good health and have realistic expectations for improvement.
Dr. Manchester is a highly experienced San Diego plastic surgeon, and he has extensive skill and experience with the lower body lift. Because the belt lipectomy is a very individualized procedure which must be customized to the patient, the consultation process is very important. Typically, the lower body lift is performed with general anesthesia. The procedure may take up to seven hours to complete depending on the extent of the surgery. The surgery requires that a circumferential incision be made around the mid section of the body. Through this incision, excess skin and fat are removed from the abdomen, hips and lower back, and the buttocks and thighs are lifted. During the procedure, the patient must be turned three times in order to reach the back and underarm areas.
The recovery after the lower body lift takes about six weeks. During this time you will likely experience some swelling and bruising, as well as some discomfort. You will be able to take medication to help alleviate your discomfort. Drains may be inserted after surgery to collect excess fluid and these may remain in place for up to one week. A compression garment will need to be worn for a period of time to help support the treatment area and minimize swelling. You will likely be able to return to work within one to two weeks of your surgery.
What is a belt lipectomy?
Belt lipectomy, which is also referred to as the lower body lift, is a surgery which addresses excess loose and sagging skin in the mid section, including the abdomen, outer thigh, hip, back and buttocks. It is an ideal procedure for individuals who have lost substantial weight as with gastric bypass surgery. The surgery essentially combines the techniques of several procedures at once including the buttock lift, the thigh lift, and the tummy tuck.
