Brachioplasty, known more commonly as an arm lift, is a surgical procedure which restores a firmer, more pleasing appearance to the upper arms by removing excess skin and fat. As a result of age and weight fluctuations, the skin of the upper arms can lose elasticity and take on a loose or flabby appearance. This area of the body can be particularly challenging to tone through diet and exercise, but the arm lift can help by tightening the upper arm skin.

You may be a candidate for an arm lift if you are physically healthy and have realistic expectations for improving the appearance of loose or flabby upper arms. For patients with significant amounts of fat in the upper arms, brachioplasty can be combined with liposuction. If fat alone is the main concern, liposuction performed alone may be an option.

Dr. Manchester performs the arm lift (brachiioplasty) at his clinic in San Diego under  general anesthesia.  Liposuction is performed  with skin removal on almost every case, giving the patient a more natural and youthful arm.    The incision for the arm lift is typically located on the inside of the arm between the axilla (arm pit)  and elbow. The length of the incision will depend on the degree of excess skin present.   Dr. Manchester will reshape the supportive tissue and remove excess skin in order to achieve a firmer, more toned youthful upper arm appearance.

After your arm lift, you may experience mild  discomfort which can be managed with medication that will be given you.    You will need to wear a special compression sleeve  for a period of time and this will help to support the upper arms and minimize swelling. You will likely be able to return to work after one week, though you will need to avoid strenuous activities and exercise for a longer period of time. Full activity without restrictions can typically be resumed after six weeks.
